The structures of crystals have been found to take on different shapes and sizes, and many have been found to be very attractive. Different substances form different crystals, and different conditions can result in different structures even for the same substance. Understanding the process of crystallisation will better allow one to form the desired crystals. The Science of crystallisation is also a key separation technique taught in chemistry.

Learning Objective(s):
(i) Understand the process of crystallisation
(ii) Understand how crystallisation is used as a separation technique

Suitability: For age 12 and above

What To Expect From The Workshop

Substances will be provided for crystallization. Some heating or use of hot water may be involved. Time is needed for the process of crystallisation and immediate forming of crystals are not expected by the end of the workshop.
